An introduction to the SNCDMC

Within the area that encompasses the work of the SNCDMC are present the 3 major coastal ecological ecosystems which are vital to human security and survival of biodiversity; The Mangroves, The Seagrass Beds and The Coral reefs. These 3 ecosystems have for hundreds of years provided the basis for food security of the coastal people in this region. In recent times a large emphasis has been placed on the conservation of these ecosystems due to the high level of biodiversity they boast. As naturally occurring regions such as those that exist in Southern Negros have the ability to be extremely productive, the products which arise from them should be harvested in such a manner so as not to adversely effect the environment and the natural stability of these systems. Thus to ensure such a relationship of harmonious use and conservation exists between the people and the environment the council was established.

The vision of the council states; Institutionalized Integrated Coastal Resource Management (ICRM), with abundant marine and terrestrial resources, stakeholders' empowernment, multisectoral collaboration and equal opportunities thereby attaining food security and uplifting the quality of life of the communities.

The mission of the council states; Shall lead in the protection and preservation of the natural resources by mobilizing and empowering upland and coastal communities through coastal and upland reforestation, enforcement of appropriate fishery and other environmental laws, provision of alternative livelihood, establishment of marine protected areas, and instill environmental awareness through education and information campaign.
